  6.   1.0 - 1.0.2  Limited-release versions. Mostly changes to documentation
  7.                and a few last-minute bug fixes.
  8.  
  9.   1.0.3        First fully approved public release. Still no Kagi payment
  10.                mechanisms.
  11.  
  12.   1.0.6        No substantial changes to the program, but Kagi is finally
  13.                available so a new release is warranted. The new version
  14.                number is bumped up a couple of notches to help avoid con-
  15.                fusion with the original Font Gander (sans Pro), which was
  16.                distributed in versions between 1.0 and 1.0.5.

  18.   1.0.7        Added "Mimic Type Reunionｪ Sorting" option to the prefs.
  19.                This came after months of head-banging frustration, trying
  20.                to find a way to keep "B Garamond Bold" right next to "I
  21.                Garamond Italic" on the menu and on the printouts - that
  22.                sort of thing. Gander's method of shuffling fonts in and
  23.                out of memory makes this difficult if not impossible to
  24.                achieve by any conventional means, but if you have a well
  25.                organized font collection (as you should), this filename-
  26.                based sorting scheme can be just as good.

  28.   1.1          The new file-based sorting preference seemed to beg for a
  29.                corresponding upgrade to the plug-ins (i.e., those built
  30.                by Gander Quill), to recognize a new keyword that prints
  31.                suitcase file names similar to font names. So, we dipped
  32.                back into Gander Quill, added the "<FILE>" keyword, also
  33.                added "<PAGE>" for good measure, and just happened to spy
  34.                a potentially nasty bug that could have caused problems
  35.                when keywords were used in text boxes holding more than
  36.                255 characters (fixed). Taken together, the improvements
  37.                to both Gander Pro and Gander Quill seemed to warrant a
  38.                major new version number.

  40.   1.1.1        Prettied-up Gander Pro's long-neglected prefs dialog and
  41.                whipped up a quick band-aid fix for Gander Quill's cos-
  42.                metic problem with Greg Landweber's "SmoothType" system
  43.                extension. The SmoothType problem remains, but it's not
  44.                as noticable most of the time, and either way, it never
  45.                did affect printing (to the best of my knowledge).

  47.   1.1.2        Well, it turned out I could do a little better than file-
  48.                based sorting in my attempt to mimic Type Reunion. It's
  49.                now called "Family-Based" sorting - a step away from a
  50.                trademark infringement even though it's a step closer to
  51.                the goal. Still can't sort family members very nicely, to
  52.                make sure Roman comes before Italic for instance, but the
  53.                members do hang together without regard to which suitcase
  54.                they're in. Again, it's very hard to do these things when
  55.                the resources are not memory-resident. Stay tuned.

  57.   1.1.3        Fixed the magnifier window so it can't go part-way off-
  58.                screen in grid mode. It now appears wholly on whichever
  59.                screen the mouse-click occurred on. Also added tab key
  60.                selectability to the font menu. Typing the tab key moves
  61.                you down one item on the menu; a shift-tab moves you up.
  62.                This will help users of TypeTamerｪ, which currently seems
  63.                to have a bug that disables menu items in groups of 32.
  64.                These users can tab through the disabled items normally,
  65.                and as always they can temporarily override TypeTamer by
  66.                holding down shift when they select from the menu. The
  67.                initial reports of the TypeTamer problem gave me a bit of
  68.                a scare because it sounded like it may have been caused
  69.                by metacharacters - namely the "(" character - in Post-
  70.                Script font names. Gander was adding the PostScript names
  71.                to the menu as part of the new "Family-Based Sorting".
  72.                Although it turned out that this was not the problem, it
  73.                is still a potential problem, and so PostScript names 
  74.                will no longer be displayed on the menu. Sorry.

  76.   1.1.4        More cosmetic improvements to the Preferences dialog.
  77.                Also made the grabber-hand/magnifier switching more com-
  78.                patible with multi-button mice and trackballs.
  79.  
  80.   1.2          Added the ability to customize the strings in Gander 
  81.                view. Is that worth a major version number increase? I
  82.                don't know, but a rose is a rose is a rose.

  84.   1.2.1        Minor facelift to the custom strings dialog. No changes
  85.                other than that, but the new Font Gander Pro Website 
  86.                <http://home.att.net/~BHuey> calls for a new release with
  87.                appropriate documentation revisions.

  89.   1.2.2        Fixed an annoying problem with the registration algorithm
  90.                and lifted the restriction on "Include Natives" in print-
  91.                ing when "Family-Based Sorting" is active.

  93.   1.2.3        Limited release, partial bug-fix (see next entry).

  95.   1.2.4        Fixed rare startup bugs in both Font Gander Pro and Gander
  96.                Quill, and synchronized version numbers of both programs.
  97.                Added "metered cursors" to Gander Quill, to facillitate
  98.                more accurate placement of guides.

  100.   1.2.5        Limited release, partial bug-fix (see next entry).

  102.   1.2.6        Fixed a Gander Pro bug that caused some printing errors
  103.                to go unreported. Print jobs would terminate with a beep
  104.                and nothing more. Fixed a Gander Quill bug that caused
  105.                bombs when picture objects containing text were rendered
  106.                into thumbnail picts during the "Build Plug-in" process.
  107.                Also added spinning cursor so that long  builds aren't
  108.                mistaken for freezes. In addition, made overdue changes to
  109.                Gander Pro's documentation, to incorporate these revision
  110.                improvements into the main text, and beefed up the online
  111.                "Help..." window. It's now an actual, genuine scrolling
  112.                text, good enough to replace the Quick Start guide.

  114.   1.2.7        Minor changes to the documentation (no-cost registration
  115.                for licensed users of the Rascal edition of Font Gander).
